The International Master of Science Degree awarded by the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) is recognized as equivalent to the Official Master of the Spanish university system in the framework of the European Higher Education Area.

Programme

The programme of the first year consists of seven core modules addressing the entire agro-food marketing process through lectures, case studies, group dynamics, practicals with statistical software packages, individual and group projects, round tables and technical visits to agro-food firms.

The Master will be delivered in blended learning format, combining online learning with face-to-face classroom lectures. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the academic programme will be given online with live interactive classes. When the national and international situation regains normality, students will attend lectures in person. Physical attendance to lectures will not begin under any circumstances before January 2022.

Supply, demand and prices of agricultural products

Supply, demand and prices of agricultural products

This module introduces the concepts of supply and demand in the medium and long term, production functions and costs, and estimation of elasticities. Students will study the theoretical framework of price determination in agricultural markets, examine price variations in space and time and learn the theory of marketing margins.

International trade and modelling of agricultural products

International trade and modelling of agricultural products

In this module students will learn about the main theories and trends of international agro-food trade, as well as elements for the development of agricultural and food policies and their repercussion on international trade. The module will introduce modern information, communication and data management systems. Finally students will learn how to build econometric models for agricultural products, from problem identification through to model verification and application.

Agro-food market structure and policies

Agro-food market structure and policies

This module describes the structure and institutions of the agro-food system. Students will become acquainted with the methods used to analyse the system and study the impacts of globalization. Students will analyse the role of public and private institutions in agricultural markets, with special emphasis on global and sustainable components. They will also gain insight into the evolution of the CAP as well as current trends in food policy.

Marketing and market research

Marketing and market research

This module addresses new trends in food marketing, and analyses consumer behaviour: lifestyle, nutrition, health and food safety, etc. Students will study quantitative and qualitative research techniques performed at different stages. They will also learn about current market research techniques.

Programming the marketing mix

Programming the marketing mix

This module deals with the marketing mix variables. Students will analyse product and price policies and learn how to implement advertising and commodity promotion schemes. They will study branding and brand management, analyse distribution functions and strategies for the choice of marketing channels. The module also addresses the use of e-commerce and logistics as a factor of competitivity.

Marketing strategy in international markets

Marketing strategy and control

This module focuses on planning, target setting and marketing strategies. Students will address the theory and application of product and process innovation in the agro-food industry. They will review sales organization and management, marketing audits, marketing strategies and costs.

Marketing strategy in international markets

International marketing and business case studies

The final module commences with a review of international markets and marketing strategies. Students will work in groups to analyse various multinational business case studies and discuss them with the rest of the class. The programme concludes with a market simulation excercise with virtual businesses to define strategies and reach targets.

Marketing project

Marketing project

During the first part of the programme students will work in groups to develop a market research project in collaboration with partner firms. Students will develop solutions for marketing challenges and present them to the firms, applying knowledge and techniques acquired during the programme to market situations in a real business context.

About us

CIHEAM Zaragoza was established in 1969 and is one of the four Institutes of the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), together with Bari in Italy, Montpellier in France and Chania in Greece. The headquarters of the Organization are based in Paris.

CIHEAM’s objectives are to develop cooperation between the countries of the Mediterranean through a comprehensive training and education programme, promoting strategic research and cooperation in the areas of agro-food, fisheries and natural resources and to enhance political dialogue on these issues in the region.

The Master will be delivered in blended learning format, combining online learning with face-to-face classroom lectures. In response to the current health situation concerning Covid-19, the academic programme will be given online for the first three months, with live interactive classes. When the national and international situation regains normality, students will attend face-to-face lectures. Physical attendance to lectures will not begin under any circumstances before January 2022.

Access is open to candidates of any nationality who have the academic level qualifying them to carry out postgraduate studies in their country of origin, or the equivalent to 240 ECTS credits of undergraduate studies. The Master is held biennially and enrolment for the taught part of the programme takes place every two years.

Selection process

The selection process is conducted by CIHEAM Zaragoza’s studies commission for the Master, based on the documents submitted by candidates with their application. Academic results and any previous professional experience related with the area of specialization are the main aspects considered.

Dates and deadlines

Part One of the Master is held from 27 September 2021 to 3 June 2022.
Part Two will commence in September 2022 with a duration of 10 months.

Application deadlines are the following:
Candidates that request a scholarship: 17 May 2021
Candidates that do not request a scholarship: 6 September 2021.
All applicants should accredit B2 level of English. Students that cannot provide accreditation will be invited to a Skype interview in order to assess their level of English.

Registration and scholarships

Registration fees are 2244 euro per academic year
Candidates from CIHEAM member countries may apply for a scholarship to cover registration fees, medical insurance and full-board accommodation.
Candidates from other countries may apply for a grant to cover part of the registration fees.
This fee corresponds to Decree 65/2020 of 30 July of the Government of Aragon and will be updated in accordance with the new official fees set by the Department of Science, Universities and Knowledge Society for the academic year 2021-2022.
